Unit 10. Modal verbs of deduction or speculation

| 11 may 2009
Listen when to use modal verbs of deduction. The podcast lasts about 8m. Enjoy!

This is the story to practice modals for deductions in the past: Tom and Frank are friends, but they live in different cities. Tom lives in Seattle while Frank lives in New York. Last week Tom flew to New York and dropped by Frank's house for a surprise visit. Unfortunately, Frank had left on business, so...

Now, listen and repeat:

Tom and Frank are friends.
Frank wasn't home...
when Tom went to visit.
Tom must've been mad.
Frank might've stayed...
if Tom had called.
They can't have been glad.

Hi, everyone!

Welcome to your blog! I've finally set it up. As you already know, we'll use it as a way to supplement our lessons. I hope it helps you improve your English skills!

To start with, I noticed some of you didn't know what a podcast is. Here is a video that explains it and if you look at the right of the page, under "English Online Resources", you'll find many sites where you can download podcasts. I highly recommend that you start using them, they're fun!
